Jeff & Josie

How a paratrooper and a corporate VP landed on common ground

When you’re married to a man who used to jump out of airplanes, and who runs his commercial real estate business at full speed, it can be helpful to find a place to pause and assess your financial landscape together.

For Josie Salzbrun, that place is Brian Adamek’s office at E-Wealth Partners.

“Personally, I am not a risk taker,” says Josie, who is vice president of real estate appraisal at JP Morgan Chase & Co. “I’m kind of steady-as-you-go consistent, and Jeff’s business is not like that at all—it’s up and down, up and down. So for us to have somebody to talk to like Brian, to help us kind of level things out, was really important to me. To eliminate some of that anxiety, and just the unknown.”

You quickly realize that Brian’s a very honest guy and has high integrity. Brian's trying to win—but he's trying to win by helping people.

Jeff,

Living with a risk taker

Jeff Salzbrun, Josie’s husband, owns Commercial Equities Group in Minneapolis, and he scores himself at the highest end of the risk-taking scale when it comes to finances. He believes in going all out.

“I can go live in a trailer house in the middle of the woods the rest of my life,” says Jeff. “I don’t need much. So risk it all. Like, go! Go to the max.” He sees risk as an important part of being alive. “We’re all setting these limitations on ourselves in this world—and we don’t realize the potential.”

As for Josie, she’s not opposed to risk, but she wants to feel comfortable with it.

She says Brian has helped provide peace of mind. When Jeff has an investment idea she’s not sure about, they run it by Brian. “It’s eliminated some of the back and forth that Jeff and I might have had before,” says Josie. “So we don’t have to hash that out anymore.”

For us to have somebody to talk to like Brian, to help us kind of level things out, was really important to me.

Josie,

“When we’re in a meeting with Brian, he’ll always stop and look at me and make me feel like I’m part of the conversation,” she says. “He asks to make sure I’m comfortable with what we’re saving here and there, and where our investments are going. I feel like he’s very inclusive.”

The search for the right financial planner

Jeff keeps a meticulous spreadsheet of the couple’s net worth, and he’s done so for years. He’s passionate about researching new ways to optimize taxes and grow wealth. He’s exceptionally savvy with his money, and he’s not going to trust his finances to just anyone.

“Finding Brian was quite the process,” he says. “So many planners focus on one thing. Brian really was paying attention to all the fine details—and continues to do so today.”

Josie appreciates that Brian is easy to talk to.

“Depending upon somebody’s personality, it might be more difficult to let down your guard and share your thoughts and feelings about investing,” she says. “I mean, it’s a personal thing. It’s all-encompassing and it involves a lot of pieces of your history and your life. It was easy to open up and share with Brian. Right off the bat, he was just open, just very easy to talk to, and it was easy to lay everything out on the line for him.”

It's eliminated some of the back and forth that Jeff and I might have had before. So we don't have to hash that out anymore.

Josie,

It’s not about buying a mansion

One thing Jeff and Josie have in common is their goals. Neither is trying to get rich for the sake of having money. Although they could afford more, they live with their second-grade son in a modest Northeast Minneapolis neighborhood paying a mortgage the size of a “utility bill”, as Jeff puts it. (“I’m just happy here,” he says.)

Both enjoy their lake home. Both want to make sure their kids (ages 24 and 7) are taken care of. And both are committed to financially supporting the causes and people they care about.

“I love to help people and mentor people,” says Jeff, “and opportunities do come along that are very cool. You just quietly do little things that make massive changes in some people’s lives. And that’s kind of what I would continue to do with the extra money.”

A guy you can trust

It’s not just Brian’s financial expertise that keeps Jeff and Josie working with Brian. It’s also his commitment to them as a couple.

“I just think Brian’s a really genuine guy,” says Josie. “I feel like he really cares. He’s not just doing it for the money. I mean, he likes what he does and it shows—and he’s really working for the best interest of us.”

Jeff agrees. “You quickly realize that Brian’s a very honest guy and has high integrity. He’s very transparent in what he’s doing, and there’s not a lot of guys out there that are that way. I mean, I get Brian’s trying to win—but he’s trying to win by helping people.”
